THE CENSUS IS COMING - DON'T BE LEFT OUT!
Every household in the country will be mailed an invitation to complete the decennial Census. It is very important to complete the Census to help avoid an undercount because the Census provides critical data that lawmakers, business owners, teachers, and many others use to offer daily services, products, and support for your community. Every year, billions of dollars in federal funding go to hospitals, fire departments, schools, roads, and other resources based on Census data. The results of the Census also determines the number of seats each state will have in the U.S. House of Representatives, used to draw congressional and state legislative districts.
Invitations from the Census will arrive between March 12th-20th, 2020 and the invitations will include instructions for responding online. You can also respond to the Census by calling one of the toll-free numbers listed on the invitation, or you can respond by mail.
It is important to respond to the Census to make sure your community is not undercounted. The federal government reports that more that $675 million annually is allocated using Census data. Additionally, it is estimated that each person who does not complete the Census in Maryland represents $1,850 per year in missed federal funding. Over a 10-year period that accounts for $18,250. In 2010, Maryland’s estimated undercount was 53,300 residents, resulting in nearly $973 million in federal funding not accessed over a ten-year period: https://census.maryland.gov/Documents/reports/2020-0115-Census-JCR-Report.pdf
